Order Plants
Soon, if not already, you may be ordering plants
via mail order. How you treat mail order plants once they arrive on your
doorstep can make a big difference in how well they thrive. Always open
the boxes as soon as possible after arrival. Inspect your order and make
sure it's in good shape. If it isn't, call the sender and let them know
they usually send a replacement. Unless there's going to be an imminent
freeze, it's always best to plant right away if possible. But more often
that not, you won't be able to drop everything to run outside and plant.
If that's the case, take the following steps:
Unwrap the plants. Make sure they have adequate moisture, but don't overdo
it if you have to add water. Loosely recover the roots. Store bareroot plants
where it is dark and cool. Store potted plants with light and warmth, but
out of direct sunlight. Plant as soon as possible.
