PRESS RELEASE 4 FEBRUARY 2000 IMMEDIATE
SCHOOL CROSSINGS UNDER THREAT DUE TO LABOUR'S GLA ACT

The future of Ealing's school crossing patrols are in doubt following the sudden transfer of responsibility for management from the police to local authorities as a part of Labour's Greater London Authority Act.
At last night's Environment Committee it emerged that Ealing Council was woefully prepared for the transfer of responsibility which will take place on 1 April. Arrangements for transfer of staff have not yet begun. Officers confirmed that while Ealing would receive funding for school patrols of £118,200, this would be more than £100,000 short of what was required to staff Ealing's 51 school crossing patrol sites.
Conservative Environment spokesman, Cllr Anthony Young called on the Council to protest against the move which may leave dozens of school crossings un-patrolled. He said:
"It is outrageous that the Labour Government has left local authorities to flounder in this way. It is very difficult to find staff to work the school crossings, especially with such short notice. Coupled with the lack of adequate funding, we know that many school crossings will remain unmanned for a very long time."
